A short film produced by GEMYDU’s young people is being screened at outdoor film evenings across Groote Eylandt.
The film titled Yilyakwa, which means ‘bush honey’ stars youngster Francis Bara and elder, Kathleen Mamarika.
GEMYDU also screened short clips at Angurugu and Umbakumba educating young people on the effects of sugar on their bodies and the importance of drinking more water.
And at a Malkala movie night, the focus was on bullying, cyber safety and respect.
GEMYDU youth coordinator Lana Williams said the aim was for the films to create fundamental changes to behaviours that could lead to youth disengagement and antisocial activity.
“This strategy sets out a framework for action to promote our local culture, healthier food and life choices,” Lana said.
