TWO young Indigenous girls will travel to Canada for the International Association of Women in Policing (IAWP) conference in August.

The girls have been chosen for the 2018 Groote Eylandt Female Indigenous Youth Leadership Initiative by Northern Territory Police, which aims to improve role modelling of females in community, enhance their leadership abilities and improve behaviour and school attendance.

NT Police senior constable Deb Blackwell said the girls were in a phase of their life where their decisions could see them either have adverse contact with police or make the right choices.

Names of the two girls and a support adult will be announced on Friday, June 15 at 12noon at the ASEC Hall in Alyangula.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The International Association of Women in Policing (IAWP) was established in 1915 to provide professional development, mentoring, training, networking and recognition for female law enforcement officers and civilian support staff.

In 2017, the IAWP held its conference in Cairns, Queensland. A number of police officers from the Northern Territory Police Force attended the 2017 IAWP Conference including the founder of this initiative, Senior Constable 1st Class Debra Blackwell.

Senior Constable 1st Class Debra Blackwell joined the Northern Territory Police Force on 8 April 2002; since then, Senior Constable Blackwell has performed duties in general duties (at Palmerston, Tennant Creek and Alyangula), the Property Office, Property Crime Unit, Scene of Crime Officer, Domestic Violence Prevention Unit, Child Abuse Taskforce, Crime and as a Community Engagement Police Officer (CEPO).

Inspired by the 2017 IAWP Conference, Senior Constable Debra Blackwell returned with an idea of sound merit; an idea that will benefit the Northern Territory Police, the police officers whom become involved in the initiative, the Indigenous persons whom become involved in the initiative and those whom sponsor the initiative. The idea has grown to be the International Association of Women in Policing – 2018 Groote Eylandt Female Indigenous Youth Leadership Initiative.
